PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - So just what did the Steelers get with their 3rd round pick LB Alex Highsmith form Charlotte?
That is what Cook and Joe asked Charlotte 49ers Assistant Coach/ Co-Defensive Coordinator Marcus West when he joined them on Tuesday.
“Someone asked me to describe Alex in 3 words,” West told the guys. “I said self-reliant, consistent and student…I think that describes him to a T.”
West said he has carried the chip on his shoulder of being a walk on and having to prove himself and he continues to carry that with him and it’s what motivates him. He also calls him a master of his craft but a student of the game as well.
“He is an eager student to want more…to learn more,” West added. “He is loyal, he is unbelievable and he will be that for the Steelers I know.”
Part of the study was to learn more about the spin moves Denver Broncos LB and Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller has shown…which he molds his game after but admits he has work to do before he is at that level.
“Von Miller is special. He is a different being.” West said. “Alex Highsmith’s spin is not Von Miller’s spin. Von Miller’s spin is worth 30 million dollars. Right now Alex Highsmith’s spin is just a 3rd round pick…5 years ago it was just a shot to walk on.”
He says he continues to work hard to study the greats to perfect his play and he will in the NFL just like he has done in college.
He has that chip that he will carry with him.
