AUSTIN (1080 KRLD)- At a press conference at the State Capitol on Thursday, Governor Abbott said he’s received confirmation that his mandatory face mask order should mean that he won’t have to reinstate the shut-down of non-essential businesses.

“The face mask requirement that I've imposed in the state of Texas will achieve the results that the CDC director announced yesterday, and that is if everyone will adopt the face mask requirement, and wear a face mask, we will be able to get control of COVID-19……a lockdown is the last thing that we need in the state of Texas if everyone will adopt the best practice of wearing a face mask.”

As for reports of long waits to receive results from COVID-19 tests, Governor Abbott assured Texans that the problem was being addressed. He did say the issue was with an overload on private labs “such as Quest Diagnostics and some others, state-based labs and other local-based labs have a 24 to 48 hour turnaround… the turnaround lags that have occurred in some parts of the state of Texas should be a thing in the past sometime soon.”

Abbott went on to say the lag times should go down on the private labs as all nursing homes around the state begin receiving new testing equipment that will expedite the turnaround process.
