Whether they are learning online or in person, Texas high school students can now choose African American studies as an elective.

For the first time, African American Studies is now offered as an elective at Texas high schools.

The State Board of Education unanimously approved the course back in April and Dallas area board member Aicha Davis is credited with getting the course approved.

Davis in a first term board member and she says she is so excited about the offering.

The curriculum was created and introduced at the Dallas ISD last year.

Texas is the 5th state to offer an African American studies course statewide.

A Mexican American studies course was approved in 2018 and Davis tells a local Dallas newspaper she's now working on a Native American Studies course.
