American Airlines is giving employees five more days to decide if they're going to take a voluntary leave offer or take a chance on being furloughed before the end of the year.

The deadline had been today, but American Airlines CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom said yesterday employees now have until August 17th.

Federal Coronavirus help for the airline industry runs out on October 1st. One of the conditions for accepting that help was the carriers were not allowed to furlough workers.

In a letter to employees, Parker and Isom say they and the unions "have not let up in our efforts to make the case" for an extension in the federal Payroll Support Program.
