DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The City of Dallas has hired the first staffer for the Office of Community Police Oversight.

Tanya McClary will be the Monitor for the office and work with the Community Police Oversight Board.

She currently has a similar position in New Orleans, where she is the Chief Monitor of the Office of the Independent Police Monitor. She oversees police disciplinary hearings there and handles use-of-force cases against officers.

She has previously worked as a defense attorney in Texas, Maryland and Louisiana.

The Office of Community Police Oversight was approved by the Dallas City Council last year as part of changes to the civilian oversight process for the Dallas Police Department. It will monitor DPD's investigation of complaints and has the authority to conduct independent investigations for the Community Police Oversight Board.
