DENTON (1080 KRLD) - In Denton, residents are once again pushing city officials to remove the confederate soldier monument in the downtown square.

This isn't the first time the statue, which is engraved with the words "Our Confederate Soldiers" and sports separated drinking fountains, has drawn negative attention.

Erected over a century ago, some people say the statue is outdated, and though it has historical significance, it's inappropriate to showcase in the heart of the town.

Several petitions have come and gone trying to get the monument removed. A few days ago, a new petition was started on change.org. It already has nearly 14,000 signatures.

Denton County has tried twice in the 21st century to interpret the memorial in response to public critiques. In 2004, a placard was placed beside the memorial, saying all men are created equal.
