A Dallas man whose sexual assault of a teenage family member led to a savage attack on the victim has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge.  Robert Cayald, 27, has pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful restraint.  He had been charged with the sexual assault of a child.  Cayald was sentenced to four years in prison.

Cayald was arrested three years after the assault when the girl, who was 13 at the time, made an outcry to authorities.  Police uncovered a brutal and gruesome attack that led to the arrest and convictions of other family members.

Court records say the victim became pregnant.  The members of her family tried to force an abortion by giving the girl pills.  When that didn’t work, the victim was beaten and kicked until she miscarried, as family members tried to cover up the sexual assault and pregnancy.

Cayald and three others were arrested in 2015.  Sharon Jones was sentenced to 12 years in prison for orchestrating the attack.  Her daughter Cecilia McDonald pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven years.  Cedric Jones Jr., son of Sharon Jones, was sentenced to five years in prison.

Cayald was declared mentally unfit to face the charges and was committed to a state hospital.  Court records show last month he was ruled mentally competent.  The records show he was allowed to plead guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for the four-year term.
