The Fort Worth school board is scheduled to meet Tuesday evening and could adopt a plan to begin in-person classes.
Fort Worth ISD began with online classes only the day after Labor Day.
Currently, Fort Worth ISD plans to resume in-person classes October 5. The district had handed out 21,000 WiFi hotspots and 42,000 Chromebooks to help students connect for virtual classes.
Superintendent Kent Scribner says, if current trends continue, students in prekindergarten through third grade could return to the classroom sooner.
"For our youngest learners, we need to minimize their screen time," Scribner says. "We really want teachers to engage, have paper and pencil assignments. If the numbers head in the right direction, we could be phasing in in-person instruction sooner than October 5 with our youngest learners."
Monday, Tarrant County reported 273 additional cases of COVID-19. For the first time in two weeks, no deaths were reported. A total of 201 patients were in the hospital, and Tarrant County has reported a total of 605 deaths.
"If those numbers continue to decline, our board will be discussing possibilities," Scribner says. "It's our hope that we not only hit the ground running with online learning, but we get our students back into classrooms as soon as possible. That's the goal."
The agenda does not list a date to resume in-person classes but could include moving the start of in-person classes sooner or later. The agenda does include "Discussion and Possible Action to Extend Back-to-School Transition Process by an Additional Four Weeks as Allowed by Texas Education Agency Guidelines."
The Texas Education Agency allows districts to suspend in-person classes for the first four weeks of school. To continue beyond the first four weeks, districts must receive a waiver from TEA.
