DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Drop off and pick up zones are coming to Deep Ellum.

For the last several years, people living and playing in the area have complained of constant stops by Uber and Lyft drivers, clogging up Main Street during the busiest times on Friday and Saturday nights.

Councilman Adam Medrano says in additions there are safety concerns.

Starting Thursday the neighborhood will establish pick up and drop off locations for ride share companies.

"Deep Ellum has always been an entrepreneurial place, willing to try new things. We believe this new pilot program will improve the experience for residents, visitors and businesses alike," Medrano says.

One business owner welcomes the new zones.

"Its a problem when the cars are stopping to pick up riders and they put on their hazards. It clogs the whole street and cars are backed up for blocks," she says.

Signs have already been put up around the area, marking the 5 new zones. Police say they will begin a 30 day warning period, once the program starts on Thursday.
