DALLAS (KRLD) - Sometimes duty calls when you're not on duty. That's what happened to one North Texas nurse who helped saves lives after a plane crash, while he was on vacation.
Joseph Brookshire has seen plenty of trauma as a nurse at Texas Health but it was on a trip to Canada for a nursing conference when duty called. He was outside and noticed a plane taking off, but then saw it seemed pretty low. He had a gut feeling he should check it out, which he did. He drove about a mile up the road and saw the plane had crashed in a river that ran parallel to the runaway. He and a couple of other people pulled a passenger and pilot out the plane and began CPR. The crash made the news in Canada where reports said, without their help, the probably would not have survived.
"I'm just glad they crashed in a place where we were able to get to them," Brookshire said. "I think you're supposed to help your fellow human beings."
We're proud to call Joseph Brookshire this week's KRLD Difference Maker.
