North Texas high schools Arlington Martin and Denton Ryan will have a lot of reasons to celebrate on Friday, when they meet on the field at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
For one, the two local powers will finally get to kick off their 2020 season, which was delayed when COVID-19 forced the University Interscholastic League to push back the start of the season for Class 5A and Class 6A schools.
Meanwhile, there is also a milestone to consider. The UIL is celebrating 100 years of sanctioned high school football in Texas, and Arlington Martin-Denton Ryan is part of that observance. The 4 p.m. game is part of a doubleheader, which also includes Longview-Temple Friday night.
KRLD's Chris Sommer talked with Martin head football coach Bob Wager about this year's coronavirus-related challenges, and about the task of facing Ryan to open the year in a game that came together at the last minute.
