In 2020, State Farm Insurance received a total of 75 broken water pipe claims in Texas. The entire amount paid out statewide was just over $760,000. In comparison, the growing numbers from last week's winter storm are monumental.
As of Monday morning, State Farm's Chris Pilcic said the company had received about 18,900 claims related to the latest weather outbreak. And while total amounts are being compiled, Pilcic said the typical payout last year on frozen and busted pipes was north of $10,000.
For any property owners who have delayed filing a claim, they are urged to do so as quickly as possible. Experts advise documenting all damage with photos and/or video, and Pilcic added that if a plumber is brought in to replace broken pipes, save the old equipment in case it is needed for documentation.
Pilcic spoke with KRLD's Chris Sommer.
