Over half of Americans over the age of 18 drink coffee daily. Of those, 35% prefer to drink it black; or without any sugar or cream. And according to a study, those who drink black coffee are psychopaths! The study surveyed almost 1,000 adults about their flavor preferences. They also took four different personality tests that assessed traits such as narcissism, psychopathy, sadism, and aggression. What they found out is that people who added milk, cream or sugar in their cup of joe generally tended to have more “agreeable” personality traits like sympathy, cooperation, and kindness. Those who enjoyed the full bitterness of coffee tended to have dark characteristics. The same traits were also found for those who enjoy other bitter foods such as tonic water, kale, broccoli and radishes. The researchers made it clear that “bitter” is an extremely subjective term and that their own study is limited. They also are unsure of what causes the correlation between bitter tastes and disagreeable personality traits. But the news is not all negative for black coffee drinkers, other studies have found those who drink black coffee are more health-conscious, even if they don’t know it. Pure coffee has all kinds of amazing health benefits, while milk and sugar obviously don’t. People who drink their coffee black reap all the health benefits of coffee without any added fat or calories. Bottom line, it’s possible that a taste for black coffee could signal psychopathic tendencies, but you shouldn’t automatically run screaming from anyone who skips the cream and sugar.
