The governor introduced a plan to resume school classes in the fall last month and this week the School Board of Alachua County developed a more specific draft plan for the reopening of schools in the fall of 2020, which would give parents the choice of sending their kids to school or continuing online courses. This is in addition to the CDC's recommendations also released last month that include using cloth face coverings whenever possible, providing adequate cleaning supplies such as soap, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and no-touch/foot-pedal trash cans. Now the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is now weighing in on the subject with their recommendations, which include children in pre-kindergarten spending as much time outdoors as possible, children in elementary schools can wear cloth face coverings if they do not touch their mouth or nose. Desks to be 3-6 feet apart, and they should use outdoor spaces when possible. The guidelines are similar for secondary school students with the exception of a more discipline requirement on wearing face coverings. They also recommend that teachers rotate among classrooms, rather than students, to cut down on hallway traffic, keeping students in their own classrooms for lunch (and/or eating outdoors when possible), marking hallways and stairways with one-way arrows, assigning seats on the bus and encouraging alternate transportation whenever possible, and keeping playground use to small groups. While Marion County Public Schools are still working on their re-opening plan, parents and guardians with kids in Alachua County can comment on the recommendations, as they aim for a finalization on July 15th, with the first day of the 2020/2021 school year for most school districts, including Alachua and Marion, to begin Monday, August 10th. Florida's Back To School Tax Holiday for 2020 is from August 7 to August 9, 2020, for clothing, footwear, and backpacks costing $60 or less, school supplies costing $15 or less, and the first $1000 of the sales tax price of personal computers or personal computer-related accessories.
