Nothing can ruin an indulgence moment like freezer burn on your ice cream. Freezer burn occurs when the moisture in the ice cream evaporates and then it refreezes on the surface, creating the crystals on top and changing the taste and texture. However, by turning the ice cream container upside down when you return it to the freezer will cause partially melted ice cream to drip onto the lid where it has a less chance of ruining the still-cold portion. Take it a step further by placing the ice cream container inside a zip close plastic bag as this will allow the ice cream to 'stay soft'. Just make sure the lid of the container has a tight fit to prevent a messy leak.
