Thousands ski or ride at the region's snow resorts each weekend. At lunchtime, most wind up in a bustling cafeteria, juggling trays of burgers, fries and cokes. But for a few dollars more, some seek out the special mountain eateries with a view and fabulous fare — shrimp, steak, ribs, chicken.

A decades-long favorite has been the Winter Garden Restaurant at Elk Mountain. It has a cathedral ceiling with a spectacular view of the slopes.
