PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — We hear a great deal of concerns raised about social media and the potential dangers. But psychiatrists and psychologists see an advantage as well.

Access to care is a problem in the psychiatric world, and people with mental health issues often go untreated. Psychiatrists are turning to mobile health apps as a way to reach out to patients.

Online care makes a great deal of sense in the psychiatric world, but there is another advantage as well. You may or may not realize it, but your smartphone allows you to be tracked  in many ways — not just where you are, but what activities you are involved in, and even what you are purchasing or doing for entertainment.

In the right hands and with a person’s permission, people with conditions such as bipolar disease can be monitored from afar, and theoretically, problems could be caught before they even happen.
