PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Are you frustrated with belly fat? Scientists from Michigan say blueberries might be able to help.

Research found there is a high level of naturally occurring antioxidants in blueberries.

The goal is to fight metabolic syndrome — a group of health problems that includes too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, and high triglycerides.

Together, these conditions increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.

So how do the blueberries help?

One possible mechanism is that blueberry intake affects genes related to fat burning and storage, and it could help with weight, and then help with the increased risk of diabetes that occurs in those situations.
