PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The human body is extremely complex and the more we learn about our bodies, the more we learn about how diseases attack.

COVID-19 is a virus that we are learning about as we are treating patients.

For instance, the lining of our blood vessels called the endothelial lining is now being seen as a crucial target where the virus attacks.

As a result of this attack, clots can form anywhere in the body.

In addition, inflammation occurs, which leads to organ damage and finally as the endothelial cells are destroyed, they essentially explode and release fluid that, in areas like the lungs, can cause major problems.
