PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An operating room nurse from South Jersey is retiring after 41 years on the job. Her co-workers surprised her on Friday by greeting her with flowers and balloons and joining her on her final one-mile walk from home to Jefferson Health in Washington Township.

Tears were rolling down cheeks after more than a dozen of Anne Chiefari's co-workers popped out from behind a bus just before she got to the hospital.

"We really work together, and they've been so supportive all along," she said. "I'm going to really miss them, so my new life is going to be hard."

It's a bittersweet day for nurse Colleen Gurovich. She planned the surprise.

"She's amazing!" she said of Chiefari. "She's amazing, and I'm happy for her that she gets to start her new life and enjoy it with Tony."

Chiefari's husband Tony has been making this walk with her every day since 2002, and he was also crying tears of joy.

"It's absolutely wonderful that everyone is being so supportive for her, and I couldn't think of a better way to send her off for her last day. It's just marvelous," he said.
