PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)  If you’re planning to head to the beach in Delaware this holiday weekend, you can cross bar hopping off your agenda. Gov. John Carney is closing all beach bars at least through the weekend, beginning Friday.

“Over the last couple of weeks we have experienced an uptick, a resurgence of COVID-19 positive cases in the beach areas specifically,” Carney said.

And the majority of those cases, he added, are now in young people in their late teens and 20s.

“A lot of these young adults in the beach communities live together, they work in similar kinds of establishments, they play together,” Carney said.

Health officials say it’s not just the people that go to the bars they’re concerned about; they want to make sure establishments are also doing their parts by following guidelines.

So officials are stepping up enforcement.

If bars aren’t doing their part, they could be bumped down to Phase 1 restrictions, or maybe even closed.

Delaware is staying in Phase 2 of the state's reopening plan indefinitely.
