It was still dark when the main broke on Chestnut Street at around 5 a.m., sending water down to 44th Street, where it pooled and froze. Cars rolling through the intersection then tracked the water up toward 43rd Street, forming two sheets of black ice.
One driver didn’t see it, lost control of an SUV, And slammed into a tree. The driver had to be hospitalized.
