How to motivate your child to keep up with online school work

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) Many students don’t find online learning as engaging or intellectually stimulating as being in the classroom, and they are having a difficult time staying motivated. One education and parenting expert has some advice on how to keep kids focused.

While many students may have lost interest in school, they are still interested in staying in the same grade as their friends. So Dr. Karen Aronian, Ed. D., said reminding them that they don’t want to repeat the year is a powerful motivator.

“We have the ability to reach out to their teachers foremost, we can easily find out online what a student needs to know at grade level,” she advised.

Contributing to the problem, she said, is the great diversity of education being rolled out through e-learning.

“Whether we’re looking at the 50 or so million that are public school or the 5 to 6 million private school students, they’re all receiving something very different,” she said.

Adding to student apathy, some schools aren’t giving letter grades for assignments. So remind them that skills build on other skills, so to be ready for the next grade they have to do their school work.

Aronian added that now more than ever, parents need to take an active role in their child’s education.
