PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man has been charged with insurance fraud for falsely collecting benefits from his late wife even though he remarried after her death.

According to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, 67-year-old John Higgins was collecting survivor benefits on behalf of his late wife, Philadelphia Police Officer Sharon Higgins, who died from a heart attack while on duty in 1987.

John Higgins was entitled to collect the compensation from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, unless he remarried.

Prosecutors say he remarried in 1990, but they say he did not disclose the marriage on dependency benefits forms. He continued to collect compensation for more than two decades, racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars.

John Higgins is due in court next week for his preliminary hearing.
