PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Take a closer look at your friend's social media pictures as they could contain important health information.

Dr. Sharath Guntuku, lead research scientist with the Penn Medicine Center for Digital Health, says his study shows that people who are depressed tend to post darker pictures.

"The colors tend to be less vivid, they also tend to use a lot of gray scale images which are black and white, and they also tend to show images that show less pleasure," he said.

He says the posts may also be of just that person, with a somber expression and not having a lot of fun.

He suggests if you see several of these posts from the same person, reach out, offer support and some socialization.
