This is the fourth year the Penn Wharton Entrepreneurship Startup Challenge was held, but the first time it was held online.
The top prize of $30,000 went to My Virtual Veterinarian, founded by Wharton MBA candidate Felicity Johnson. She said one of the benefits of her service is that appointments can be made to fit anyone's busy schedule.
"My Virtual Veterinarian makes it incredibly easy for a pet parent to find a veterinarian who is available to them at that time, so they are not dependent on one particular practice to receive veterinary care," Johnson explained.
The veterinarians' biographies and pricing are listed. Users select the one that works best.
A video or chat appointment can be requested online or through the app.
A benefit to the vets is that the service limits person-to-person contact during an age of social distancing.
Building its network of participants, fundraising and marketing are among the next steps for the startup.
