Too many of us are overweight, and new figures show that 42% of Americans are obese. In the past 10 years, the number of severely obese people has doubled.
Dr. Rohit Soans, director of bariatric surgery at Temple University Hospital, says part of the problem is we're not getting the message that too much weight hurts our health.
He says there are several reasons we're gaining weight: we're bombarded with poor food choices and too many of us don't understand how to make healthy choices or read food labels.
He also places some of the blame on the food industry.
"If you turn on the TV and watch a football game, every other commercial is about beer, every other commercial is about pizza and fast food and chips. The food industry spends millions and millions and millions of dollars advertising," he said.
He claims the best ways to reverse this trend are with better education and regular exercise.
