PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There's a new historical marker on Market Street detailing the history of a place where many Philadelphians did their holiday shopping for 135 years.

Councilmember Mark Squilla spearheaded the effort to get the historical marker for Strawbridge & Clothier cemented in the sidewalk at Eighth and Market streets.

"The City of Philadelphia, even as it continues to grow, still remembers where we came from. So I think it's important to remember that," he said.

Chip Clothier says its an extremely proud moment for both families.

"It's great to be a part of the permanent history of Philadelphia," he said.

Former employee Inga Hamilton was smiling ear to ear when they pulled the white sheet off the marker.

"It was a really great time of my life and my work life. It was a great company to work for. I'm pleased to see it recognized," Hamilton said.
