Upcoming career fair focuses on hiring veterans

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Military veterans and their spouses, out of work because of the COVID-19 crisis, are invited to participate in an upcoming free virtual hiring event.

The Mid-Atlantic Virtual Career Fair for Veterans and their spouses will be held Wednesday, May 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. About 60 companies and organizations will be represented, including many from the Philadelphia area. They offer career opportunities in a variety of fields including administration, banking customer service, IT, and security.

"I can tell you that just 60 days ago, before the pandemic really hit hard, the unemployment rate for military veterans was hovering just below 3%, the lowest in the history of the United States," said Chris Stevens, a senior vice president at RecruitMilitary. "The Department of Labor just came out with the stats for April and we are hovering right at 12%. A drastic, drastic increase, so obviously that is the reason for the influx of vets looking for jobs."

Stevens, an Air Force veteran, said job candidates first need to register.

"All they have to do is create that profile which will entail loading up their resume, very simple, they can do it up to five minutes prior to the event, well, actually during the event," he explained. "Just go to recruitmilitary.com, register it and then you can just look at our resource page and that will help them prepare to have a very successful day."

Stevens said strong leadership skills and work ethics are some of the benefits of hiring veterans.
