Darren Lawrence, 59, of Wilmington, Delaware, is facing a long list of charges, including rape of a child and aggravated indecent assault.
Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said Lawrence was charged after the woman, now 22, told authorities that Lawrence sexually assaulted her when she was between the ages of 9 and 12.
“The sexual abuse occurred at various locations at Chester County and during a time when the victim’s mother left the child in the defendant’s care,” Ryan said.
“The victim indicated the assaults happened about once a month for a three-year period of time,” Ryan added. “She also disclosed to a detective that the defendant took nude photographs of her when she was about 10 or 11 years old.”
According to Pennsylvania law, which was changed this past November, there are no longer limits on how long a victim has to come forward about allegations of abuse that occurred when he or she was 18 or younger. Prior to the change, accusers had to be under the age of 50 for charges to be filed.
Lawrence was a trooper with the Pennsylvania State Police from 1982 to 2001.
He is being held on $250,000 cash bail and awaiting a preliminary hearing.
