The Dallas salon owner who opened her hair salon during the pandemic and was both supported and called out for breaking the law is now running for state senate.
Shelley Luther announced she's running for the Texas Senate District 30 seat.
Luther drew national attention when she defied Governor Abbott's order for businesses to stay closed to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Luther was ordered jailed for 7 days for ignoring the order but only served 2 days pending an appeal. She was also fined $1,000s.
Gainesville Republican state Rep. Drew Springer also announced his candidacy over the weekend, and Denton Mayor Chris Watts has also filed paperwork indicating he will run in the September 29th special election for the seat left open by state Sen. Pat Fallon.
The filing deadline is August 28th.
