Charges filed after 2-year-old boy dies of suspected gunshot wound

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia man is facing criminal charges after his 2-year-old son died of what investigators say appears to be a gunshot wound.

According to the criminal complaint, 27-year-old Jorddan Thorton initially told police his son Julius Thorton was jumping on the bed in their Levittown apartment and fell and hit his head.

“However, the officer that arrived on scene first, in his opinion, based on his experience, it was a gunshot wound,” said Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub.

Thorton is charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Weintraub said they’re still investigating, and current charges assume it’s an accident "where perhaps little Julius was able to inflict this wound on himself. It gets progressively worse after that, the potential is his father accidentally shot him, then it gets even worse than that.”

No one else was in the apartment at the time, so Weintraub said they may never know exactly how it happened.

Julius Thorton would have turned 3 on Christmas Eve.
