PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The pandemic has some families from the Philadelphia area changing things up a bit for the holiday weekend. But many say they aren’t letting the pandemic rain on their parade.

Scott Shuster, his wife Julie, and their daughter Samantha are spending their holiday weekend together but separate from their extended family. But they say they haven’t had to sacrifice family time for safety, they simply got creative.

“I made some dishes and my mom made some dishes and we met, socially distancing, to swap dishes,” Julie Shuster said.

Freddie Ordonez and his family usually get into the spirit of the holiday while standing in long lines looking for the best deal. But not this year.

“Usually afterwards you want to, because it’s Black Friday, go shopping. But none of that is possible this year,” Ordonez said.

So instead, his family is meeting up with other family members that live close by and take walks together.
