PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Police are investigating a 5-year old boy’s drowning in West Philadelphia. Investigators say his dad came home and found the boy in the bathtub full of water, and his mother tried to hurt herself.

Police were called to an apartment at 48th and Pine streets in West Philadelphia at around 10 p.m. Monday.

“The (boy’s father) arrived home to find not only his wife bleeding from her wrist but to find his son submerged face down in the tub,” explained Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Police also say the boy had a superficial cut on his neck. Medics soon arrived. They performed CPR and took the boy to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the boy had been home with his mother, 40, who had a self-inflicted cut on her left wrist. She was taken to the hospital for treatment and is now stable. After the hospital releases her, she will remain in police custody.

“She is conscious and talking,” Small said. “We believe she may have some mental health issues, but this is a preliminary investigation as to what’s going on.”

The father is also cooperating in the investigation. And police are talking to the neighbors to see if they heard anything.

Authorities said it was not immediately clear if law enforcement had responded to the home in the past.
