SEPTA launches smartphone payment option for buying, reloading Key Cards

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA riders now have another way to pay for passes.

Starting Monday, riders can use smartphone payments — Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay — to buy or reload their Key Cards at station kiosks and sales offices.

Up until now, the only options riders had to add passes or funds to their Travel Wallets were cash, credit and debit cards. Those options will still be available, but Chief Press Officer Andrew Busch said it made sense for SEPTA to get on board with the smartphone pay option.

“They’re using them in their everyday lives for purchases,” Busch noted. “So the idea of the SEPTA Key program is to bring those payment options to your daily commute or your daily trip to wherever you need to go.”

Riders still need to swipe their Key Cards or uses a pass at turnstiles and fare boxes. However, Busch said the transit agency is exploring the idea of expanding electronic payment options in the near future.

Smartphone transactions are available at the Market-Frankford and Broad Street lines, Center City rail stations, and along major bus loops.
