The 2020 E! People's Choice Awards went down last night on Sunday, November 15. If you didn’t have a chance to catch it, then we’re about to be you’re choice favorite because we took the liberty of highlighting a few of the nights' shining moments.
Sorry, not sorry, but host Demi Lovato basically stole the show. Kicking off the annual event with an incredibly hilarious and captivating opening monologue. Demi expressed how this the Peoples Choice Awards happens to be her favorite,”not just because I've taken home a few of these trophies myself, but this is the only awards show decided entirely by the fans.” Well People’s Choice might be you’re favorite, but Demi you’re ours, choosing to make light of a heavy situation, she also took a moment to poke fun at her whirlwind engagement to Max Ehrich in her opening monologue.
Summing up her crazy year, Demi said, ”I performed at the GRAMMYs and sung the National Anthem at the Super Bowl," she shared. "But then COVID hit and everything shut down, so I did what everyone else did, I went into lockdown mode and got engaged. I also didn't know this could happen, but reached the end of Instagram four times," she quipped. "I binged seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars, got unengaged, then went looking for aliens in the desert, so basically the same as everyone else.” And according to her, she wouldn’t change a thing.
Okay, let’s get loud! Also on our list of favorite moments is Jennifer Lopez winning the Icon Award. During her three-decade long career, "Jenny from the Block" has basically done it all. Singing, dancing, acting, producing, designing, oh and she’s mom of two. The only thing she hadn’t done is rightfully received an award for doing it, that is until now.
Before accepting the award, J.Lo was virtually joined by her children Max and Emme and pals Renee Zellweger and Nicole Kidman, who all shared their admiration of the mega-star. When it was time for Jen’s acceptance speech, as to be expected, she kept it 100. Starting off by saying, "2020 is no joke, right?,” but that “this year was the great leveler, it showed us what mattered, what didn’t.” And that for her, “it reinforced what matters most.” Additionally Jenny spoke of her fans and the motivations behind her success, as well as the struggles she’s faced as a Latina woman, finishing off her her speech by saying, "I accept this award with great humility and gratitude.” Ugh, what an Icon.
Now, let’s talk about performances, our personal fave of the night was Chloe x Halle, who slayed their performance of "Ungodly Hour.” The pair sparkled and shined, taking the stage in matching skin-tight black latex outfits. Accompanied by four backup dancers, matching their aesthetic, and giving us some major The Matrix vibes with their trench coats, head-to-toe black and sunglasses.
Blake Shelton also had a shining moment, besides The Voice once again winning Competition Show of the Year. Blake also took home the trophy for Top Country Artist. First thanking the fans, Blake said, “me and my team should be thanking all the fans out there who voted for this thing.” He then thanked his now fiancée Gwen Stefani , the only way he knows how, by making us laugh. "Thank you to my new fiancée, Gwen Stefani," he shared. "That's S-T-E-F-A-N-I, if you need to Google it to figure out who she is. Thanks for the inspiration and I love you guys, thank you.” Just double checking, that’s S-T-E-F-A-N-I, lol just kidding.
Basically, the entire evening was a much needed celebration of entertainment and the entertainers who make it, as well as all of us, the people they make it for. And while there were many more memorable moments throughout the night, those were just some of our favorites.
