Last Friday Swizz Beatz and Timbaland blessed us with a Verzuz surprise, letting us know that just before the long Memorial Day Weekend would come to an end, we’d get a second battle, between R&B groups 112 and Jagged Edge.
Shortly after the surprise announcement two of 112’s original members, Daron Jones and Quinnes Parker, announced they would not partake in the battle due to ongoing legal issues with the other two members of the group Slim and Michael Marcel Keith.
Slim and Keith, would be representing the band in the battle. As for Jagged Edge, Brian Casey, Brandon Casey, Richard Wingo and Kyle Norman would all be present and accounted for.
Putting the drama aside, with Saturday’s battle between Beenie Man and Bounty Killer being such an epic success, these two legendary groups really had to bring it, and even with a few members short, that they did.
Let us paint the scene, it’s 8PM on Monday night, with the evening dubbed as “Something For The Ladies,” we had bottles of rosé on deck, ready for one romantic night of R&B singles. After a few connection and sound issues, (it wouldn’t be a Verzuz battle if there wasn’t any) Jagged Edge started things off with the silky throwback "He Can't Love U,” 112’s response was to hit us with the Bad Boy sultry bump "It's Over Now.” As the sound issues continued so did the hits, with Jagged Edge, staying tried and true choosing ballad after ballad and 112 threading in sweet notes among seductive jams, holding out until the 18th round to hit us with the crowd-pleaser “Peaches & Cream.”
As always, the comments section was popping off with comments from fans, including some notable names like Diddy, LaLa Anthony, Missy Elliott and Snoop Dogg. LaLa was digging the vibes, letting us know, “I can listen to this EVERYDAY!… Forever classic,” as 112 played “I’ll Be Missing You.” Snoop Dogg was also all about the nostalgic feels, commenting “that s*** banging, and “smoke on the way!” Hmmm, was that a little hint from the Dogg himself?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock or off the grid in the mountains somewhere then you know that Verzuz battles have become a social media staple since the start of quarantine. We’ve seen epic match-ups like Babyface and Teddy Riley, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, Nelly and Ludacris, and more! Could Snoop and Busta be next?! Maybe Usher and JT? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
