Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni are teasing the long-awaited reunion of Benson and Stabler on social media.
On Friday, the actors shared distanced selfies from the set of “Law & Order: SVU.”
“We are a little bit closer,” Meloni captioned a photo that saw Hargitay sitting a few feet behind him.
Hargitay posted a similar photo in which she was in front while Meloni grinned in the background with his face mask dangling from his ear. She captioned it: “Now even closer.”
The duo previously reunited virtually for an “SVU” table read in December.
Meloni is set to reprise his role as the beloved character in a new spinoff titled “Law & Order: Organized Crime'' coming to NBC this fall. His return was initially supposed to happen during the season 21 finale of “SVU,” which was set to serve as a backdoor pilot for the spinoff. However, that was nixed as production was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Instead, Stabler’s character will now be reintroduced to the franchise during the season 22 premiere of “SVU” alongside his former partner. It will be his first appearance in the franchise since his exit. He last portrayed Stabler in the season 12 finale of “SVU” in 2011.
Neither “SVU” nor “Organized Crime” have a confirmed air-date yet, but both shows will air back-to-back on Thursday nights beginning at 9 pm.
NBC notes the series will follow Stabler as he returns to the NYPD after suffering a “devastating loss.” The season has already received a 13-episode order.
Amidst the pandemic, “SVU” also announced that it is hoping to help theater actors currently out of work by casting them in upcoming episodes of the crime-drama. Showrunner Warren Leight explained that the NBC drama is “trying to hire every Broadway actor we can while we and they wait for the curtains to rise again."
