There’s a lot of influence that went into Best Coast’s upcoming fourth studio album, Always Tomorrow. A decade together for Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno, some well-earned experience, sobriety, and somehow Vanderpump Rules.
The show was a backdrop for Bethany as she was writing for the new LP, and the cast ultimately found their way into the video for the new single, “Everything Has Changed.”
“I wrote it a really long time ago and I wrote it before I got sober,” Cosentino tells RADIO.COM in an exclusive new interview. “I was going through some dark stuff, and I wrote this song that was kinda just like, at the time I didn’t understand it but now I look back on it and it’s almost like a psychic thing where it’s now a life that I feel like I actually live.”
The ideas that Bethany put forward led into a life she now leads, but at the time she was battling through depression and found a lifeline in Vanderpump Rules. She had never watched the Bravo show before, but it became an important part of her life in the lead-up to creating Always Tomorrow.
“I had never watched the show, I knew people loved it, it was one of those shows that people were obsessed with. I was like, ‘alright whatever dude. I’m so depressed. I’m just at home all the time. I’ll watch this show,’” Cosentino remembers.
“It was the only thing that got me out of my head and was like, medicine for me. I was like, ‘this is the best show I’ve ever seen. These people are so wacky. I love this.’”
After a twitter conversation and a meeting at the Cheesecake Factory with Katie from the show, Bethany became friends with the cast and ultimately asked them to appear in the video for “Everything Has Changed.”
“I reached out to them and was like, ‘hey could I convince you to be in this video?’ I didn’t have to convince them at all. They were like, ‘of course. When does it shoot?’”
The results are amazing, and still a little shocking to Bethany. “It’s one of those things where when I watch the video I’m like, ‘how did I make this happen?’”
You can hear more from Best Coast in the video above, and check out an exclusive performance of “Everything Has Changed,” and well as new song “Different Light” and the already-classic “Feeling Ok” below.
