“I had a dream. I got everything I wanted,” Billie Eilish sings on her first new single since her debut album. But she quickly pivots with her trademark bluntness, adding “Not what you’d think, and if I’m being honest, it might have been a nightmare.”
Eilish takes inventory of her career explosion on “everything i wanted,” spilling her guts a la Kurt Cobain in their shared awareness of the fakeness of fame. Over a steady, chill beat that’s more “bad guy” than “when the party’s over,” Eilish’s nightmare wakes her up to the fact that no matter how sincere she is about her art, some may see her as disposable, until she’s reassured that she doesn’t give herself enough credit and “they don’t deserve you.”
Cobain famously once pleaded “don’t hurt me” in an interview about being a reluctant rock star. The words hit like a ton of bricks, but Eilish is safe for now in the arms of a friend who promises “as long as I'm here, no one can hurt you.”
“everything i wanted” is one of two new songs promised by Eilish in the coming days and the first taste of new music since the release of WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? in March. The 17-year-old is also preparing for her Where Do We Go tour, which kicks off March 9th in Miami and runs until April 10th in Tacoma, WA. Eilish will then head to Mexico, South America and Europe.
