Dolly Parton shared marriage advice with fellow Country singer Gabby Barrett during a digital sit down for Amazon Music; “He doesn't get involved in my business, and I don't in his, so we have our own little world that we create for ourselves."
The 74-year-old country legend preached a message of “sensible separation” with her partner of 54 years, Carl Dean. “He's pretty much a loner and a homebody, and I'm a gypsy. But when I'm home, I love that,” she said. “We don't do the same thing so it gives us different stuff to talk about,”
Gabby was apt to glean from Dolly’s decades of experience. The 20-year-old newlywed is expecting her first child with fellow American Idol alum, Cade Foehner. The couple announced their big news posting a cute picture on Instagram, last month.
"I've always made jokes that the reason our marriage has lasted so long is because I stay gone," Parton told the “I Hope” singer. "We're not in each other's face all the time. I think there's a lot to be said about having some sensible separation because you can't be with somebody 24/7, 365 and not want to smack their face now and then."
Barrett also sought professional advice, asking Dolly why she chose not to let Elvis Presley cover her smash hit “I Will Always Love You.”
“Well that’s when I started to learn how to stand up, when to say no, when to say yes, to know when you can compromise… But when it comes down to things that matter to you the most, you can’t make a split second decision just because it sounds exciting.”
We were able to catch up with Gabby in July on the heels of the release of her brand new album, Goldmine., for a special FANDEMIC Instagram Live, chatting about her music and life during the coronavirus pandemic.
