Luke Combs conquered the 2019 CMA Awards on Wednesday night, leaving the arena with wins for Song of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year. The singer also turned in one of the most electrifying performances of the evening, standing in front of the buzzing neon for the powerful instant classic, “Beer Never Broke My Heart.”
As Garth Brooks accepted his record seventh Entertainer of the Year award, he rightly pointed out that Luke would be up in the same spot soon. After last year’s run of Best New Artist recognitions, Wednesday proved to be his official arrival as the future of Country music.

In the lead up to Country music’s biggest night, Combs hosted RADIO.COM’s coverage of the award show, taking the lead on our CMA Red Carpet Countdown and interviewing artists for us backstage. We are all well aware that beer has never broken Luke’s heart, but what occupies that sacred space for everyone else? Combs asked each star as they came through, what has never broken your heart?
“Chicken nuggets,” Kelsea Ballerini says with confidence. “That’s a good answer,” he responds in agreement. “What do you dip it in?” Kelsea volleys back, before Luke shares that he’s a “ranch and buffalo guy.”
“Do you put ranch on your pizza is the question?” Ballerini continues.
“No. I have tried it and I do like it,” Combs answers. “Someone told me one time, they’re like ‘oh you know if you put ranch on something it’s like putting ice cream on it.’ That’s how much calories is in ranch.”
“You just really crushed my dreams,” Kelsea says, broken hearted by ranch.
“When I whistle for my dog to come, he always comes,” the American Idol judge answers earnestly. “I need to get my dog to do that,” Combs replies.
