Kate Hudson says estrangement is 'unfortunately quite common' amid talk of her own father

Kate Hudson grew up in the spotlight: as the daughter of Goldie Hawn and the stepdaughter of Kurt Russell, the 41-year old actress has been sharing aspects of herself with the world all of her life.

But until recently, she kept part of her family life away from the public, choosing not to address her estrangement from her biological father and his other children.

Bill Hudson, who was married to Hawn from 1976 to 1982, had two children, daughter Emily and son Zachary with then-wife and “Laverne and Shirley” star Cindy Williams after his divorce from Hawn. In 2006, Bill’s daughter Lalania was born.

In an interview on Sunday Today with Willie Geist, Hudson said “I think that estrangement is unfortunately quite common, and I think it's important for people to talk about that,” adding that she believes that “a little bit of talk and humor” is necessary to “move us into places where we can heal some of the wounds that have affected us from our families.”

She pointed out that the “41-year-old issue” doesn’t detract from her “great family,” but that she and her brother, actor Oliver Hudson, were impacted by growing up without knowing their biological father.

“I have a beautiful mother, I have a stepfather who stepped in and played a huge, huge part in sharing what it is to have a dependable father figure in our life, but it doesn't take away from the fact that we didn't know our dad. People sometimes just need to hear that they're not alone in that,” shared Hudson.
