“Riverdale” has dropped a glimpse of what fans expect to see on the show’s premiere episode, which will pay respect to Luke Perry, who played Archie’s father Fred Andrews.
In a newly released photo obtained by Entertainment Weekly, Shannen Doherty, who co-starred with Perry on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” holds hands with Archie (KJ Apa), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), and Betty (Lili Reinhart) in a wrenching moment.
This is the first time Doherty will appear on the CW series as the show’s executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa previously announced the actress would star in the tribute episode to honor Perry.
Aguirre-Sacasa has now disclosed more details about her character.
“Shannen plays the person who tells us what happened to Fred,” he told EW. “She was there and she’s an unexpected source of comfort to Archie. A big piece of what happened to Fred comes to Archie through Shannen’s character. “
And is expected, it will all be very tense and extremely sad.
He added: “The scene is so heartbreaking because you really feel Shannen’s love for Luke.”
Perry died in March after suffering a stroke at the age of 52.
At the time of his tragic passing, the show was in the midst of filming its third season. While Perry’s death wasn’t addressed, his character was said to be away on business and didn’t appear in the last three episodes.
Part of the reason for the delay was that the writing staff wanted to take their time to give the beloved actor a proper send-off.
The season four premiere episode of “Riverdale,” entitled “In Memoriam, “airs Wednesday, October 9th at 8pm on The CW.
