The 2020 NFL season kickoff went down this Thursday (September 10) and the players aren’t the only ones that took to the field. Well in this case a stage on the field, but it still counts.
Ahead of kickoff, Chloe x Halle performed the national anthem, and not only did the sisters absolutely slay their performance, they did so while honoring George Floyd and Breonna Taylor
The duo sported custom t-shirts, featuring the faces of just two out of countless Black Americans unjustly fallen at the hands of the police. Additionally the shirts read, ”Rest in Peace" and "Say Her Name.”
Alicia Keys also took to the stage performing her 2007 hit “No One” followed by a her new song “ Love Looks Better,” for which graphics supporting the Black community portrayed on a screen were shown behind her, as the performance concluded with a screen flash of the word “Vote.”
Earlier the same day, Keys divulged that her reasoning for performing for the NFL despite recent racial issues in the league. The involvement tied into an announcement that the she will be teaming up with the league to create a $1 billion endowment fund in support of Black business and communities.
When speaking to Billboard about her endeavor, Keys said, “we are already seeing the blatant injustices that are going on around us.” The new fund comes amid a trying time of both a global coronavirus pandemic and a resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement with eruptions of protests against systemic racism and injustice following the police killings of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and others in the U.S. in recent months.
Alicia continued, ”as an artist, I’m always thinking about how can I use my platform to further racial equity. This fund is one of the answers and our goal is to empower Black America through investing in Black businesses, Black investors, institutions, entrepreneurs, schools and banks in a way to create sustainable solutions.”
