Beyonce’s father and former manager, Mathew Knowles, has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The 67-year-old made the revelation to “Good Morning America” in an interview with Michael Strahan.
"I learned that the numbers that we have for men on breast cancer are not adequate because we don't have enough men that come forward that take the exam," Knowles said in the interview. "I'm hoping by me coming here today, speaking out, letting folks know that you can survive this, but it has to be early detection. I can't over emphasize the word 'early.'"
In 2009, Knowles split from his wife of 30 years, Tina Knowles. Two years later, Beyoncé cut professional ties with her father, despite his being instrumental in shaping her career since the formation of Destiny’s Child in the 90s. While his relationship with Beyoncé was strained for several years, it appears the two are back on good terms. He also managed daughter Solange’s music career for some time.
In 2013, Knowles found love again and married model Gena Avery.
News of his diagnosis comes at the start of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer in men is very rare with males making up about 1% of new diagnoses.
Breast cancer foundation Susan G. Komen showed their support for Knowles by tweeting words of encouragement.
“#BreastCancer doesn’t discriminate. We are so sorry to hear the news of Mathew Knowles, @Beyoncé’s father’s, diagnosis,” the organization wrote to their 123K followers. “This disease is #unacceptable and we are here for all of you!”
