Atlanta rapper Lil Marlo is dead after a highway shooting took place on Saturday night. Marlo’s identity was not immediately confirmed until Sunday by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office and the cause of death has still not been determined.
Marlo’s label Quality Control Music also confirmed his passing and paid tribute in a social media post, saying he will be remembered as "a man of great talent who feared nothing.” Marlo was 30 years old.
The Atlanta Police Department confirmed to Billboard that law enforcement responded to a single vehicle accident on the I-285 near the Benjamin E. Mays Drive overpass around 11:30PM. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found that the 30-year-old driver had been shot and was deceased.
According to a spokesperson for the police, ”Atlanta Police Homicide investigators responded to the scene and immediately began their investigation.” Additionally sharing that "at this time, investigators believe the victim was the intended target of the gunfire and they are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.”
The up-and-coming rapper whose real name was Rudolph Johnson was becoming a fast local favorite, coming up along side Lil Baby and Migos. As news of his death began to spread, tributes soon poured in from artists and music industry members sharing their disbelief and condolences on social media.
Labelmate Lil Yachty saluted his friend with a photo on Instagram. "We just did a song a 4 this morning," he captioned the image. "smh rip brother @lilmarlo_1"
Meek Mill tweeted, ”Rip lil marlo prayers to his family!”
Russ shared his shock over the news tweeting, “RIP Marlo smh 2 the hard way was our s*** on tour”
The outpouring of reactions and love continued.
