August 15 marked the birthday of late rapper Nipsey Hussle, who would have turned 35 on Saturday had he not been taken from this world far too soon. 16 months ago outside of his L.A. clothing store, The Marathon.
In Nipsey’s honor, his family and friends took to social media to remember the the late rapper.
Nipsey’s girlfriend Lauren London, shared a black and white portrait of Hussle on Instagram along with a heartfelt tribute. "King Ermias Best friend Twin Flame Greatest Teacher Beautiful Strong Vessel The Spiritual Giant that walked Earth,'I Miss You' will never be deep enough for the void left in my soul. Yet, I know you walk with me -- always still. Happy 35th Eternally Yours, Boogie.”
In addition to his beloved and mother of his son Kross, Nipsey’s peers in the Hip Hop industry also took time to remember their late friend. DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, Swizz Beatz and others, all offered touching birthday tributes, including Snoop Dogg, who shared a throwback pic of himself and Hussle, captioned, "Miss u loco 🏁🙏🏽😥.”
Just one day prior, on August 14, Snoop released a music video in dedication to their friendship, for his song “Nipsey Blue,” which featured flashback footage of the times they spent together.
Nipsey’s death dealt a big blow to Hip Hop, after years of “hussle” and more than a decade of releasing critically acclaimed mixtapes, he had finally released his debut and only studio album Victory Lap in 2018. Nipsey’s perseverance as an independent artist finally paid of as he posthumously won multiple GRAMMYs at the 2020 awards ceremony after losing out on the Best Rap Album in 2018.
While, Nipsey, born Ermias Asghedom, is no longer with us, it is quite evident his memory will not be forsaken. His imprint remains, and as he used to always say, “the marathon continues.”
