Buckle up ya’ll, this one’s going to be epic. On August 7th at 8:30PM ET, The Weeknd will step onto TikTok’s virtual stage for a live-streamed, augmented-reality concert where he’ll perform a series of tracks from his latest album, After Hours.
Straying from the typical in person TikTok video, The Weeknd creatively decided to be represented by a digital avatar in what TikTok is calling its “first-ever in-app cross reality experience.” In its first attempt at with augmented-reality content, The Weeknd Experience will use 3D renderings, audience interaction, and picture-in-picture video to create an interactive and immersive livestream. Additionally stated within the official statement, TikTok users will be able to interact and engage with the singer in real time as he performs.
Abel’s team up event is a collaboration between XO, Republic Records, and AR streaming company Wave, adding to the list of notable musicians holding virtual performances. Similar to Fortnite’s recent events, like Travis Scott’s Astronomical experience earlier this year and Marshmello’s concert in 2019 - which drew in tens of millions of viewers, of whom participated live either in-game or by watching on streaming services such as Twitch.
Besides purely entertaining us, TikTok is using the concert to raise funds for the Equal Justice Initiative, a charity working to support racial equality. Users will be able to donate directly in the app, which they plan to match up to an unnamed “generous amount,” in addition to proceeds from sales of exclusive merchandise.
While this is the The Weeknd’s first official collaboration with TikTok, it’s not the first time the two have been correlated. The singer's number one single “Blinding Lights” was the inspiration behind the #BlindingLightsChallenge, a dance trend that featured the song in over 1.5 million videos on the platform, helping the song reach the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Trust us, you're definitely not going to want to miss this one. RSVP for the show here.
