Elton John is celebrating nearly three decades of sobriety. The 72-year-old shared a photo of his Alcoholics Anonymous sobriety coin with the motto “Unity – Service – Recovery” and the saying “To thine own self be true.”
“29 years ago today, I was a broken man,” Elton wrote. “I finally summoned up the courage to say 3 words that would change my life: ‘I need help.’ Thank you to all the selfless people who have helped me on my journey through sobriety. I am eternally grateful.”
The highs and lows of Elton’s career and life are chronicled in the elaborate new biopic Rocketman. It was recently announced that the film will be coming soon to digital and Blu-Ray, featuring extended musical sequences, deleted scenes, sing-alongs and more.
Elton’s successful battle with substance abuse is a reminder to those dealing with similar issues that they are not alone. Addiction and mental health issues are real. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's national helpline is available 24/7 at 1-800-662-HELP (4357).
